Interiors: the Guest Room Makeover for Spring.

Since I’ve moved into this house I’ve had various neighbours say they looked at my house but were put off by the colours the rooms were painted in. This means I lucked out because never perturbed by aesthetics, I could see a different space and it means I got the house for a good price.

But, it did mean that it was necessary to get some paint up in the bright red and blue bedrooms as soon as I got the keys. There was bright red paint in the south facing bedroom and royal blue in the north facing. It hurt my eyes and wasn't something I could live with. In the madness of moving I used some paint I already had to paint the guest room and it’s a colour I really did like but because I had used it in my flat it didn't feel like I was moving on. The room sort of sat there, ready for guests but without much furniture and certainly not finished,

When Rustoleum launched their new Down to Earth collection I just fell in love with Sandhaven - a sandy colour that reminded me of tranquil times on the Suffolk coast. Rustoelum sent me the collection of paints in this colour as I had originally planned to drench the dining room in it but when the plastering took longer than I thought I started to realise a colour running through the whole of downstairs would be better and this shade would be too warm for the south facing element.

So I turned my attention to the guest room. Mother’s day was approaching and I wanted to create a tranquil, calming space for my Mum who received a Alzheimer’s diagnosis in January. You hear about dementia and I suppose there is a feeling that it’s something that happens to other families, until it happens to yours. So I’m really making sure I treasure time with my Mum and a focus of this house renovation is providing a space for her to feel comfortable and be able to stay where I can host her and create memories.

So, on a rainy week at the beginning of March I got painting the guest room. Rustoleum paint is always easy to apply and with the help of a few podcasts I spent an enjoyable day getting this paint up. I used the chalky wall paint for the walls, the matt furniture paint for woodwork, radiator paint and UPVC paint for the windows. I even painted an old white vase with the chalky paint to match which I love. I decided to leave the ceiling in the colour it (Antique White) was but having let it bed in for a few weeks I think I’m going to match it to the walls.

By this point I’m completely out of budget so had to get creative and reuse a lot of things I had already. I wanted to get a couple of Ivar units off Marketplace for the far wall but when I borrowed one from downstairs it sat too high so I had to rethink. I scoured Marketplace for vintage sideboards but after a few time wasters and not finding much under £100 I hit Google to find wall cabinets. As I was scrolling it occurred to me that the units I were looking at weren't dissimilar to the kitchen units I’d just taken down. So I gave them a good clean, mounted them low on the wall, painted them in the furniture paint and created a top with furniture board from Wickes that I cut to size with my circular saw, sanded the edges down and caulked any visible gaps once fixed on top. I’m really happy with how it turned out and the next step is to make a cane front for it, watch this space!

I sanded down a walnut lamp base I got at a car boot for £1 and added a jute lampshade and then borrowed one of my beloved acacia chairs from the dining room until I find the right one on Marketplace. I finished off with some reeds that are so typical of the Suffolk coast and I’ll be adding some of my own photography from the area when budget allows it.

I really love this shade, it looks absolutely beautiful with dark wood and black accents. All Rustoleum paint is so easy to use. Two coats was plenty and the radiator actually only needed one (and a few touch ins). To paint your radiator make sure it’s switched off and cold and then keep off for 24 hours. The paint already contains primer so it makes it super easy to use.
