Lifestyle: I try out a New bee therapy pod experience in South Derbyshire.

This post is based on a gifted experience.

I love the bees. Everyone knows I do. My garden has been planned and planted around the love of bees. I will save every bee I see struggling and nurse it with honey and water. And I will shout at everyone who says they are cracking out the Roundup. So when I got a dm on Instagram asking if I would like to visit a bee therapy pod experience it was a big fat yes.

Bee Conscious is a bee therapy experience in South Derbyshire run by beekeeper Kristina who has a number of hives on her lands where she has been harvesting honey for some years. But a more recent addition to the and is the bee therapy pod - a wooden structure that provides a unique bee therapy experience.

Apitherapy.

I learned through Kristina that apitherapy is the therapeutic properties of bee related products and experiences. Everything bees produce have a purpose and their honey, pollen, wax, propolis, royal jelly and more. But apitherapy can also come from the bees in other forms - their venom is used for inflammatory conditions (though Kristina tells me this isn’t always the most ethical) and also their vibrations can create sound waves that can relax us and reduce stress.

The start of our session included a fascinating talk about bees from Kristina - we learned all about the magic of bees and their life cycle. Honestly, fascinating!

What is a bee therapy pod?

These pods are a relatively new invention with only 5 in the UK and Beeconscious being the only one in the Midlands area. Handmade by Kristina and her husband, the pod is designed so two beds sit on top of two active hives - the hives are closed off from the pod so you have no contact with the bees but you are exposed to the usual conditions of the hive - ionised air which is clean and pure, a heat of 33°C because bees keep a hive at this temperature and the sound frequencies of the bees working to maintain the temperature and tend to the hive. The bees are quite happy and you can relax knowing your presence isn’t disturbing or distressing them in any way.

The benefits.

It’s been found that being exposed to these hive conditions can have a hugely beneficial effect on humans. The clean air can help detoxify the lungs, the heat is like being in a gentle sauna and the vibrations induce deep relaxation. The combination of heat, sound and smell can balance the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems so the body feels more at ease and stress hormones lower. Kristina told us that the sessions are particularly good for those suffering with insomnia.

We loved our session, I went with a friend and while we were chatting away in the pod we both felt very relaxed and chilled when we left and both of us slept like logs that night.

book a session.

A 60 minute single person session costs £60 and for two people it’s £100. All sessions come with homemade cake and a delightful nourishing drink - all made with honey from the bees. The Beeconscious experience is in South Derbyshire not far from Willington. Book here.
