Product Review - a vegan alternative to a natural duvet with Larke.

If you've been following along here for a while, you'll know I bang on quite a lot about keeping my bedroom as toxin-free as possible. I've obsessed over my mattress, I splashed out on a solid wood bed frame purely so no MDF would be off-gassing next to my head all night but finding a toxin free, natural material duvet was not as easy.

Feathers were out because I'm allergic and even without the allergy I've got real concerns about how down is farmed. So for a long time wool felt like my only "natural" option. But every time I've written about wool duvets on here so many of you have asked my if there a vegan alterative and I never had a good answer for you. Until now.

Enter Larke. A eucalyptus tree fibre duvet that's fully vegan, fully natural, and after a few months of sleeping under one have fully won me over. I went in sceptical, and while I’d been sent the duvet for review it is normally backed by their 30-night trial (so worst case, no harm done, just box it back up). Hopefully by now you know where I stand with gifted items - I never accept anything where I don’t need it or think to will generate waste. But with this one I figured it was worth a go, if nothing else to confidently give you my opinion on the duvet. Turns out it may well be the answer to your natural, vegan duvet woes!

Here’s how I found using it

1. The weight is unexpectedly cosy

The duvet does feel slightly thinner than other duvets on unboxing and I was worried it would be cuddly enough but actually, there’s a really lovely weight to it without feeling heavy or stuffy. After the first night with it I was climbing straight back in with a cup of tea rather than getting on with my day (A Sunday thankfully!). It's just genuinely lovely to be under - a balance of weight and loft that’s hard to describe until you've felt it.

2. It actually regulates my temperature

This was the big one for me. As someone navigating menopause, overheating in bed has been a nightly battle - synthetic filled duvets had me waking up two or three times a night, kicking the duvet off and then dragging it back on twenty minutes later. My wool duvet completely eliminated this for me so I was intrigued how this eucalyptus fibre would stack up. The tree fibre filling behaves a lot like wool in this respect: it keeps you cool when it's warm and warm when it's cool, so it's just quietly doing its job rather than fighting you. I've slept under mine through several heatwaves now without a single 3am duvet wrestling match. I went for the 10.5 tog, which covers most of the year, and I’ll just be layering a blanket on top for the depths of winter rather than storing multiple duvets I don't have room for anyway.

3. Changing the cover is somehow enjoyable

I already thought I was pretty good at wrangling a duvet into its cover. But there's something about how this filling sits that makes the whole process almost effortless - no bunching or fighting corners. As someone who lives alone and does this solo this matters more than you may think. I've actually started changing my bedding more often just for that fresh-sheets feeling on a Sunday night. And because the filling is properly stitched down, it washes beautifully too which means I’m not worried when the dog jumps up for a Sunday morning cuddle.

4. The natural fibre feels really lovely

As someone with dust mite allergies, the hypoallergenic quality has made a real difference - my breathing feels noticeably clearer morning after morning. Everything is OEKO-TEX® and FSC® certified, which gives me a feeling of satisfaction every night of knowing exactly what I'm sleeping under and it’s impact on our planet. And despite what "tree fibre" conjures up, there's no bark, no chips, nothing rough - it's soft and cloud-like, not remotely woody.

5. The filling stays exactly where it's put

One of the first things I noticed unrolling it was the stitching pattern across the whole duvet. It's not just beautiful it also functions to stop the filling from clumping or moving, so you never end up with a cold, thin patch and all the warmth bunched round your feet. It stays evenly distributed every night. And Larke back the stitching with a 5-year warranty, so if anything ever did come loose, you’re covered.

So there you have it - the vegan, natural duvet answer I've been meaning to give so many of you for so long. I'm properly attached to mine at this point, to the extent that I'm not sure how my next hotel/accomodation stay is going to go with its inevitable synthetic duvet. Tree fibre has genuinely converted me: better sleep whatever the weather and a product I feel good about choosing for the planet too.
