Conscious Lifestyle: My Favourite Green Kitchen Cleaning Products.

When rainy days come around I love to get a podcast on and do a clean of the kitchen. Yesterday I had a new fridge freezer delivered and it was an opportunity to have a clear out of old jars lurking at the back of the old fridge and get organised.

It also spurred me on to clean out my pan cupboard which was smelling a bit fusty (unfortunately the pans carried the damp from my old place and I never quite got round to giving them a good clean!) and also give the oven a clean (which I can’t wait to replace but a working freezer was more important). I also set to work finally getting the sticker marks off the stainless steel pan I bought in the IKEA bargain basement. I had tried to get it off with degreaser, dissolving a dishwasher tablet and scrubbing with sugar soap but nothing worked. But this morning, I tried a simple mix of baking soda and a pot brush and it came clean off. It got me thinking how efficient my minimal cleaning products are and I felt compelled to share them with you. As you know, I’m all about reducing the amount of chemicals and plastics around the home and after years of trying lots of different products I’ve settled on the below which really work and cost me little.

Spruce.

Spruce is my every day best friend. Gentle enough for my wood worktops and with a beautiful, calm scent, I love to wipe down everything in my kitchen with this. And by choosing water free refills you are saving tonnes of water being shipped around for no good reason. The bottle looks gorgeous and the essential oils make my kitchen smell amazing, like having a beautiful scented candle lit.

Miniml Anti Bac.

This stuff means business but is completely natural and eco friendly! It obliterates the grease on my hob and I often use it in the bathroom to clean down the tiles, sink and bath too. Be aware that this is a powerful cleaner so it’s best not to use on marble or wood worktops - it took the oil off my wood worktop so I had to treat it again. But testament to how powerful it is which is rare for an all natural cleaner.

Baking soda.

Burned food on pans and clothes stains - a bit of baking soda will sort it all. I like to make a little paste and use a pot brush to lift off burnt on food. For clothes stains, just apply a little paste 5 mins before washing and it will lift up any grease or stains. It is also magic for the oven. I know some add lemon but I’ve found it perfectly effective by itself.

Distilled White Vinegar.

I have given up buying glass cleaners - they never worked and I find this vinegar leaves my windows completely streak free. Just spray on, wipe with a glass cloth and then buff with another clean glass cloth. You can also shine up taps, stainless steel and door handles with it.

Natural Bleach.

Sometimes life just calls for a bleach. My ceramic sink can get discoloured and looking a bit tatty but a layer of this natural bleach (Percarbonate of soda) left for a few hours and then scrubbed off makes it white again. It’s magic. It’s also safe for septic tanks and saniflo’s so can be used in a toilet too.

A Note On Cleaning Accessories.

Did you know that many sponges and clothes give off microplastics when they degrade? If you’re wanting to be eco conscious in your home, you may want to research which clothes, sponges and brushes are best to use. There’s an excellent range here.
