Dorset: Swanage and Durlston Country Park.

We all have a place that whistles through our thoughts more often than not. A place where the air is fresh and a sense of freedom comes with simply thinking about it. I’ve visited Durlston Country Park, Dorset more times than I can count on my fingers over the years yet I have yet to go when the weather is anything but dismal. But I think that’s what adds to the magic of it. A wild place that transports you with no airs and graces, it just comes as it is.

Over the years I’ve debated moving to near Swanage, such is the magnetism it has for me but the realistic side of me knows it isn’t the right thing for me. As much as the city can wear me down I thrive off difference - different things to do, different people to meet, different days. So instead I settle for a visit once a year, usually without fail, and can always rely on the weather being a bit crap.

Swanage itself is a pleasant town - it is very gift shoppy but there are gems here. In high season it can get uncomfortably busy which is why I often find myself here in early spring or autumn. I recommend parking at and doing a beautiful walk at Durlston first - a 320 acre nature reserve that is rich with history and diverse wildlife. It is estimated that 3 species of butterfly breed here and is also home to many species of birds, moths and wildflowers.

The remnants of the Tilly Whim Caves can also be found at Durlston - once a thriving mine for limestone. Carry on to the West and you’ll be treated with the old lighthouse and spectacular views along the Jurassic Coast. If you’re lucky you might spot a dolphin.

Swanage is full of cafes and shops for dipping in and out of after your abundant dose of coastal air. It’s a short walk down to the town centre from Durlston. My recommendation is to get take out and sit on the bay or to the West of the pier at Monkey Beach if you have a dog as they are allowed all year round here as opposed to the rest of Swanage beaches which have a dog ban between 1st May and 30th Sept. .

Recommendations.

Java Coffee House.

Tilly Mead, Commercial Rd

A lovely, independent plant based cafe tucked away in the back alleys of Swanage. Homemade cakes and good coffee.

Swanage Railway.

47 Station Road, Swanage.

While away another few hours on the famous railway. Take it to Corfe Castle and have a wander there if time allows.
