Recipes for the Road: Kilner Jar Muesli.
It’s easy to default to convenience food while travelling in a van but it brings about less than convenient results - less energy, an underlying feeling of disconnect from the land and produces more waste. With a few staple food hacks you can nourish your soul and body while you travel and save money while you’re at it. So this post marks the first of my Recipes for the Road series. I’ll be sharing some of my faithfuls that are low cost, less waste and easy to work with in a tiny kitchen on wheels.
This is an incredibly simple recipe (if you can call it that) and can all be bought from a zero waste shop. I bought a box of Zip Lock bags around 2 years ago and am still reusing them as you can wash them out but a large Kilner or the like (I like Ib Laursen).
You can add anything you fancy too from the dry weigh jars in the shop - chopped mango, cranberries, dried fruit…
Of course you can make this for home too.
Ingredients.
200g rolled oats
50g buckwheat flakes (optional as may not have it)
100g mixed seeds
100g sultanas
80g pecan nuts (you can rip into halves with your hands if you prefer smaller)
50g almonds or hazelnuts
50g dissected coconut or if they have it toasted coconut chips
1/2 tsp all spice (optional)
Method.
Simply weigh out all your ingredients, pop into your jar, give it a shake and it’s ready to go. I find this is best served with Minor Figures Oat Milk and an epic view.
